Teach Us To Pray
Matt 6:6-15

This Sunday, we will be covering the last section of the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6:13. I thought it would be good to refresh our minds and think through all of the areas of these instructions in preparation for Sunday.

QUESTION: What area of prayer have you found encouragement in the last few weeks? Personal, during worship, grace groups? What about it was encouraging?

Matt. 6:7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
Matt. 6:8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Matt. 6:9 Pray then like this:
“Our Father in heaven,
(1) hallowed be your name.
Matt. 6:10 (2) Your kingdom come,
(3) your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Matt. 6:11 (4) Give us this day our daily bread,
Matt. 6:12 (5) and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Matt. 6:13 (6) And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil (we will be covering this on Sunday).
Matt. 6:14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,
Matt. 6:15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

QUESTION: What areas of your life have you seen change by implementing Christ’s instructions on prayer?

QUESTION: What do you often trust first instead of prayer?

QUESTION: From the points above (1-6), which do you find the hardest to understand and why?

QUESTION: From the points above (1-6), which do you find the most comfort in and why?

This lesson is shorter this week so the groups could spend more time practicing praying for each other. Please take time to confess your sins (even if you start small), and share what burdens you are carrying. There is joy in being helped, and joy in helping others. Let’s not rob each other of this joy.

Then take some time to ask the Father to provide what he has promised.
Pray through the prayer and apply it to your lives and group:

How can we praise the name of God in our homes, relationships, work, and families?
How can we look for the evidence of “Your kingdom” homes, relationships, work, and families?
How can we seek for “your will be done on earth as it is in heaven?”
Help us to trust that the Father will “Give us this day our daily bread”
Remind us that you will forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

PRAISE, PRAYER, AND CONFESSION:
What can you offer to the Father in glory?
What is a sin you need to confess?
What is a burden we can carry?
What can we take to our Father in prayer?
